etchells2013Thu 5 to Sun 8 Jun
The Etchells Australian Winter Championship 2014

Mooloolaba Yacht Club
Parkyn Pde, Mooloolaba
Racing starts approx. 10.30am & finishes by 4pm
Online Entry here >>
The Etchells Australian Winter Championship will be conducted off Mooloolaba from 5-8 June 2014. The annual Championship attracts the best Australian & New Zealand one-design class sailors to compete in seven race series. Previous winners of the series include America's Cup, Olympic class, Sydney-Hobart race winners & class World Champions.
The sailors enjoy travelling to Queensland to compete in the warm June winds blowing off Mooloolaba. The sailors usually encounter not only high-quality competition but also challenging sailing conditions. The Mooloolaba Yacht Club venue is well set up to host the Etchells fleet with good facilities, great hospitality & immediate access to the competition waters.
Mooloolaba accommodation for the sailors & their families ranges from camping to four-star+ self-contained units & luxury apartments, all located only a few minutes walk from the Yacht Club.

The Etchells Australasian Winter Championship 2014 kicks off with racing for a fleet of 33 boats, a host of talented sailors chasing the 18th Winters title and a healthy handful of new skippers.

Missing from this years event are 16 teams that have chosen to compete in the Etchells World Championship in Newport, Rhode Island. The other two Australian teams skippered by Mark Bradford and Paul Garaty, are using the Mooloolaba event as their pre-Worlds training event.

Joining the event are eight new skippers, several with crews that have competed in Mooloolaba and others are also new to the Winter Championship.

The new skippers are Geelong - Darren Mahoney and Nick Gunner, Lake Macquarie - Greg Torpy, Pittwater - Jill Connell, Southport - Grant Allen, Sydney - Mike Thackray, Cronulla - David Baldwin and Brisbane - Alistair Cowen.

Of this group, Torpy is the most familiar with the Mooloolaba race track. He lived and sailed on the Sunshine Coast for several years before moving back to New South Wales. He was also a member of Peter McNeil’s team which won the 2004 Etchells World Championship, held off Mooloolaba.

NOTE: The event is often described by Australia's top sailors as probably the most competitive regatta on the Australian yachting calendar at this time of year. Often competitors bring their partners with them to the event who enjoy the holiday weekend participating in social, tourism & shopping experiences during the event .

Sun 22 June
Chet Faker
Lake Kawana Centre
7.30pm

18+ Event Only / No Pass Outs / Cash Bar
In 2011, Nicholas Murphy recorded a cover of No Diggity late one night just for his friends. Shared by a handful of people, the song spread like wildfire until reaching #1 on the indie blog charts Hype Machine, and so the Chet Faker identity was born – a nod to Chet Baker's singing style but incorporating influences from a youth spent producing house and disco.

Before Chet Faker, Murphy spent his time in suburban Melbourne, Australia. Splitting his musical output between a penchant for soft and soulful singer-songwriter work and an appetite for electronic music production. But it was when he coupled his love of analogue instruments and sounds of early dance music – only this time slowing the tempo - with his natural ability for RnB soaked vocals, that something truly exciting happened.

He soon began recording his debut EP and creating a dynamic Chet Faker live show alternating between solo performances and a 4-piece band, both backed by samples and an electronic soundscape.

Now, Chet Faker is set to release his debut album Built on Glass. Two years in the making it brings together all his influences from house to RnB and fuses it together with his smokey vocals. Built on Glass will surely further cement Chet Faker as one of the most unique artists of 2014.
